بزرگترین دختر امیرمؤمنان، على بن ابى طالب علیه السلام، یعنى حضرت زینب کبرى سلام الله علیهما درسال ششم و بروایتى سال هفتم هجرى دیده به جهان گشودند .

پس از بازگشت پیامبر خدا (صلی الله علیه وآله)، جبرئیل بر حضرتش نازل شد و نام زینب را از جانب خداوند تعالى براى این کودک برگزید .
پیک وحى همچنین حوادث تأسف آورى را که مقدر شده بود در آینده براى این بانوى گرامى در کربلا اتفاق بیفتد به اطلاع رسول خدا رساند .

بدین ترتیب بین زینب کبرى و برادرش حسین بن على (علیه السلام) از همان کودکى پیوندى عمیق و پیمانى ناگسستنى منعقد گردید .
این دو یار وفادار هیچ گاه از یکدیگر جدا نشدند و هیچ حادثه و مصیبتى نتوانست رشته رابطه معنوى بین آنان را پاره کند .
سالها گذشت و عبدالله بن جعفر طیار پسر عموى زینب (سلام الله علیها) براى خواستگارى نزد امیرمؤمنان، على (علیه السلام) آمد .
مولاى متقیان به دو شرط با این ازدواج موافقت کردند: نخست آن که عبدالله مانع دیدار زینب از برادرش، حسین (علیه السلام) نشود و دیگر آنکه اگر حسین (علیه السلام) تصمیم گرفت خواهر را با خود به مسافرت ببرد عبدالله مانع سفر زینب (سلام الله علیها) نشود و عبدالله نیز هر دو شرط را پذیرفت .
این شرط از طرفى حکایت از رشته محکم رابطه معنوى بین این خواهر و برادر مى کند و از طرفى زمینه ساز حضور آن بانوى مطهر در سرزمین کربلاست تا بتواند رسالت تاریخى خویش را ایفا نماید و نهضت خونین برادر را استمرار بخشد .

زینب (سلام الله علیها) دست پرورده دامان مادرى چون فاطمه زهرا (سلام الله علیها) و خوشه چین علم و دانش پدرى چون على مرتضى سلام الله علیه است، هموکه رسول حق او را دوازه شهر علم مى نامید .
از این رو زینب کبرى (سلام الله علیها) را همواره به فضل و دانش و کمال ستوده اند، بطورى که امام زین العابدین (علیه السلام) خطاب به عمه گرامیش مى فرماید:خدا را سپاس که تو دانشمندى استاد ندیده و دانایى هستى که از کسى دانش نیاموخته اى! و بى جهت نیست که نام زینب کبرى (سلام الله علیها) را در زمره راویان حدیث مى بینیم .
آن مخدره شخصیتى است که خطبه معروف مادرش، فاطمه زهرا (سلام الله علیها) را در مسجد پیامبر و در مقام احتجاج با خلیفه اول روایت کرده است و این در حالى بود که بیش از چهار سال از عمر شریف عقیله بنى هاشم، زینب کبرى (سلام الله علیها) نمى گذشت .

و باز شگفت آور نیست که پس از انتخاب شهر کوفه به عنوان پایتخت خلافت على (علیه السلام) و حضور آن حضرت در شهر، زینب (سلام الله علیها) حلقه درسى براى بانوان تشکیل مى دهد و به آنان تفسیر قرآن مى آموزد
مهمترین برهه عمر شریف زینب (سلام الله علیها) را سفر آن بانوى مقدس به کربلا و حضور آن حضرت در کاروان اسرا و حوادث بعدى آن دوران تشکیل مى دهد .
از زمانى که حسین بن على (علیه السلام) مدینه را به مقصد مکه ترک فرمود، زینب (سلام الله علیها) همراه برادر بود و در طول نبرد نیز این خواهر وفادار دو فرزند خود به نامهاى محمد و عون را به جبهه نبرد فرستاد تا در رکاب سرور و سالارشان بجنگند و سرانجام نیز آنان به شهادت رسیدند .
گرچه این مصیبت براى یک مادر، مصیبتى سخت است، اما زینب (سلام الله علیها) در برابر آن کمر خم نکرد و به هیچ وجه ابراز تأسف ننمود .
تنها مصیبتى که توان این کوه استقامت را از او گرفت و دل او را سخت به درد آورد، غم از دست دادن شخصیتهایى چون على اکبر و ابوالفضل العباس (عهما) و مهمتر از همه داغ برادر و مشاهده پیکر صدپاره و حلقوم بریده حسین عزیزش بود .
از این پس او وظیفه داشت از این خونهاى بناحق ریخته شده پاسدارى کند تا موج خروشانش کاخ بیداد بنى امیه را از بیخ و بن بر کند .

کاروان اسراى اهل بیت پیامبر (صلی الله علیه وآله) وارد شهر کوفه شد و طى مراسمى آنان را نزد عبید الله بن زیاد والى شهر بردند .
حضور بانوان گرامى اسلام در مجلس ابن زیاد و سخنان کوبنده و افشاگر ایشان بخوبى نشان داد که نهضت سرخ حسین همچنان زنده است: ابن زیاد: خدا را شکر که شما را رسوا کرد و مردانتان را کشت و دروغهایتان را آشکار نمود! زینب (سلام الله علیها): آنان که رسوا مى شوند مردم فاسق و دروغگو هستند و آنها دیگران هستند، نه ما! - دیدى خدا با برادرت چه کرد؟ - من جز زیبایى و نیکویى چیزى ندیدم! این کشتگان، مردمى بودند که خداوند شهادت را براى آنان مقدر فرموده بود و آنان نیز به سوى قتلگاههایشان شتافتند .
اما بزودى خداوند تو و ایشان را براى حساب جمع مى کند و آنان با تو به احتجاج بر مى خیزند .
آن وقت خواهى دید که چه کسى رستگار است .
مادرت بر تو بگرید اى پسر مرجانه! این پاسخ کوبنده و قاطع به جبار سرکشى که هرگز تصور نمى کرد اینچنین تحقیر شود، براى ابن زیاد بسیار سنگین بود، لذا تصمیم گرفت حضرت را به قتل برساند .
اما اطرافیانش او را از این تصمیم منصرف کردند .
دستگاه بنى امیه از دیرباز سعى مى کرد با حفظ ظاهر اسلام، ریشه این دین الهى را بخشکاند و نیک دریافته بود که براى رسیدن به این مقصود راهى جز منحرف کردن اذهان عمومى از خاندان پیامبر خدا (صلی الله علیه وآله) ندارد، چرا که آنان عالمان وحى الهى و تنها کسانى بودند که مى توانستند با اجراى دقیق تعالیم آسمانى، جامعه را از انحطاط برهانند .
تبلیغات معاویه چشم و دل مردم شام را کور کرده بود .
